The
African Well Fund has recently received an update on the proposed
sites for the 2004 donations.
These donations include those from the 2004 Bono Birthday
Well Campaign as well as other donations received throughout
the year. Originally, the 2004 funds were earmarked for water
projects in Ethiopia. However, problems related initially
to weather and more recently to civil unrest have made work
in Ethiopia impossible at this time.
Instead the funds will be used for well projects in the Ntungamo
District of Uganda. Despite laudable efforts by the local
authorities, water supply and sanitation levels in Ntungamo
remain very low. Some sub-counties in the district still have
water coverage levels as low as 40% with women and children
having to walk distances of more than two kilometers to find
a safe and protected water source. This is far from the Millennium
Challenge target of getting safe water within 100 meters of
every household by 2015.
The pictures on this page illustrate the current conditions.
Children fetching water from a galley. The water runs
from the hills about two kilometers away. Toilets are
located close to the catchments contaminating the water
with E.coli bacteria and typhoid. Animals share the
highly contaminated water with community members.
School children of Rugarama central primary school located
in Mutojo cell, Nyakabungo parish, Rugarama Sub County.
They are fetching water from a cattle trough just located
600 meters from their school. The cattle trough is their
only source of water and the water must be carried to
their homes. The stagnant rain water is shared with
cattle, the school and about 300 other community members.
The water is covered by algae and dark grew and is a
potential breeding site for mosquitoes.
The proposed
project will utilize the approximately $30,000 in donations
received by the African Well Fund in 2004.
The proposed four-month activity will identify sites and construct
multiple water projects (gravitated spring tanks, rain water
tanks and hand dug wells) for the provision of clean water,
as well as facilitate the formation of and train water user
committees.
In the coming months AWF will bring you updates as work progresses
on these projects. We would like to thank our donors for their
patience in waiting for these updates. AWF strives to achieve
a balance in obtaining feedback for donors without unnecessarily
burdening those working in the field. Making sure that donor
dollars are used in the most effective way possible is a priority
for both AWF and Africare.
